Class Description:
In this sculptural class students will learn how to represent the human figure in clay. We will go over coil building and working with slabs, and use a combination of the two methods to build a hollow form that will be pinched, stretched, and then carved into greater detail at the leatherhard stage. Students will learn about proportion, anatomy, and gesture as well as how to sculpt facial features. We will discuss different ways to approach surface treatment, which is not limited to glaze. This course is open to everyone but prior experience with clay is highly recommended. The class may be difficult for those who don’t already have some understanding of how the material behaves at different stages of dryness. Students in this class will focus on one final sculpture that will vary in complexity based on each individual's skill level and artistic vision.
