SUNDAY, APRIL 27, 2025
10:30am - 11:30am - Lecture and Q + A
12pm - 2:00pm - Demonstration
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Andrew lived in Kochi, Japan for four years as a high school English instructor, and pursued an intense interest in pottery fueled by Japan’s rich ceramic traditions. He moved to Upstate New York in 2010 to complete an eighteen month wood firing focused apprenticeship with the ceramic artist Jeff Shapiro. After his apprenticeship, Andrew built a small wood, gas, and salt kiln for Inlet Studios on the North Fork of Long Island. In the spring of 2019, Andrew completed his MFA in ceramics from SUNY New Paltz. His research focused on integrating local materials into his work and leading firings of the college Anagama kiln. In 2019 Andrew began working with Susan Kotulak in Germantown, NY as the Program Manager and Studio Director at the soon to be The Oki Doki Studio.
Andrew’s studio practice focuses on the enthusiastic exploration of local materials, and the continual exploration of atmospheric firing methods.LECTURE
Andrew’s lecture will focus on cultivating exploration in artistic practice and life. His career in ceramics was created from a moment of cultural exploration and sharing whilst living and working in rural Japan as a high school English teacher. Andrew’s formal education in wood firing began with a decision to take a night train to Kyoto and meet a stranger he had only communicated with digitally.DEMONSTRATION
Andrew’s demonstration will reflect his recent studio practice, focusing on softening lines and hybridizing sculpture and functional forms. Moving away from the wheel and towards a dynamic form of hand building which he refers to as coiling and carving, he pinches, pushes, scrapes, and carves his clay forms that evolve organically, forming shapes that flow from organic to architectural, and serve as canvases for the variety of atmospheric firings he uses.WEBSITE
